Somebody gave me a dog.
I took it to work,
but the foreman killed it
with a hammer.
He cut off the tail
and gave it to me, saying,
"Here are your wages,
the rest belongs to us".
Someone else gave me a cat.
The manager took it from me
and threw it living
into the furnace.
He handed me
a lump of coal, saying,
"Here are your wages,
everything else is ours".
The world's cruelty
bears no gifts.
I made for myself
a hammer and a knife.
