| Hidden in the grid were
the names of nineteen heroes of struggle,
from the French to the Russian
Revolutions. They were Garibaldi, Rosa
Luxemburg, W E Gladstone, Vera
Zasulich, Gracchus Babeuf, Fred
Engels, Emma Goldman, Georges
Danton, Mrs Webb, Bernstein,
Karl Kautsky, Karl Marx, Lassalle,
Herzen, Lenin, Trotsky,
Parnell, Marat and Saint-Just.
There has apparently been some scientific
debate as to whether Mr. Gladstone should
count as a hero of struggle. The Turtle
agrees that there is a case to answer
here, but will not engage in
self-criticism yet.
When these names had been found in the
grid, the remaining letters ought to have
spelt out the Blairist slogan, "Tough
on Crime! Tough on the Causes of
Crime!" Or rather, they would
have done, except that a gremlin got into
the puzzle, so it actually read,
"Tough on Crime! Togh on the Causes
of Crime!" Apologies.
